Makkum is located about 10 km under the dam (afsluitdijk), at the coast of the Lake Yssel (IJsselmeer) of Frisia (Friesland).
You find the the rest and the vast plain, varied with cities and villages worth seeing,
and of course a lot of water ...
Makkum has always been a fisherman village. Even today, there is still a small fisherman fleet with Makkum as its harbour.
Makkum has the last years strongly turned out as a tourist centre.
This because there has been strongly invested during the previous years in a large yacht-harbour, the dike boulevard, holiday houses and apartments.
Makkum is a village of the municipality Wűnseradiel (Wonseradeel). |
| Space, rest and recreation |
The recreation area of Makkum is delimited both at south side and north side by protected nature areas (Súdwaard en Noardwaard).
Because of this, it is assured that the green character of the area remains preserved.
You will also find here sort of birds that you seldom encounter elsewhere in the Netherlands.

| Beach and surfing |
The broad sand beach of Makkum, as well as the knee-deep water, that runs hundreds of meters in the lake, makes it pre-eminently
suitable for children and surfers.
By the never ceasing wind and the knee-deep water, this beach of the former Zuiderzee is pleased far outside the borders by a lot of surfers.
For the beginners, there are two surfschools located on the beach, where you can possibly also rent a complete equipment. |
| Waddenzee and Wadden Islands |
On only one sea mile, you can reach the sluices of Kornwerderzand, by which the Waddenzee can be reached.
The Waddenzee is one of the most beautifull sailing areas of Europa.
With your own boat or with the ferry boat, you can pay a visit to one of the Wadden Islands.
The ferry boat to Vlieland and Terschelling leaves from Harlingen, the one to Ameland and to Schiermonnikoog from Holwerd

- You leave the A7 at exit "Makkum".
- Once arrived in Makkum, keep following direction "Holle Poarte".
- At the third round point, you will see the villapark at your left side.
- At the entrance, announce yourself at the reception.
- The reception is officially open until 17 hours (during high season and top weeks, the opening time could be later).
- If you plan that you will arrive after 17 hours, inform the reception by telephone (+31 515 23 22 85).
In that case, the hand-over of the key will be done in Hotel De Vigilante (see below).

- You leave the A7 at exit "Makkum".
- Once arrived in Makkum, keep following direction "Holle Poarte".
- At the fourth round point, park your car on one of the parking-places.
- Announce yourself at the reception of Hotel De Vigilante.
- The entrance of the hotel can be found at the left side, just before entering the (traffic free) boulevard that leads to the lake.

Trips along the Frisian coast, to the Frisian lake area or to the
Wadden area are a few of the many possibilities.
